Cigar box ukulele

Ukuleles

I wanted to try to make a cigar box from start to finish in 24 hours. This project was simple and didn’t take much effort.

I took some hard as rock maple and cut a strip out of it. I also used a table saw to router out the neck so it would sit nicely in the box and the fretboard would be flush with the top of the box. There are probably better ways to router it out, but I had a table saw and a time limit, so that’s the way it goes.

I used some basic hardware from Ace to set the strings in place. This isn’t the tightest project I’ve ever done, and could definitely improve on the project.

Bartop Arcade Machine

Uncategorized

During Thanksgiving breaking during my Freshman year of college, I decided I wanted to make an arcade machine. My brother Johnny and I were both home for like 3 days together so we jumped right into this project after ordering some parts to meet us at home. I don’t even remember any hesitation from any of my family members. Just wanting to build an arcade machine and my family being like, “sure okay” and getting to work.

We built the body out of MDF wood, small L brackets, and a table saw. We added hinges to make a door on the left side for access to the back.

Johnny did most of the thinking for the electronics components – and he was so creative. We took my old brick workhouse of a laptop from high school (complete with duck stickers covering the outside) and downloaded an emulator. We bought arcade machine buttons from Ebay. They totally sent us two “player two” buttons on accident.

Johnny ripped apart a keyboard and soldered the arcade buttons to the keyboard brain, and mapped the keys to the laptop. He spent a marathon day soldering the hundreds of wires. Seriously, all day.

We set an old monitor inside the cabinet and pushed it up to the hole in the arcade. It wasn’t a built in screen or anything, but I believe we get points for innovation on the cheap.

We spray-painted the outside a dark blue color and gave it white accents. I called it the Mega-Machine, since it reminded me of Megaman. I had always planned on getting a friend to add arcade style art to the side, but never got around to it.

We made it in 2011, and it floated around with me from apartment to apartment. It was offline for awhile, but it 2016 I booted her up again. At the end of 2017, I gave her a new brain. I retired the poor old duck laptop (may she rest in peace) with a Raspberry Pi 3. I replaced the keyboard motherboard with a specifically designed arcade button control panel, greatly reducing the number of wires and improving the button mapping. These improvements greatly reduced the amount of stuff that was shoved inside the cabinet box.

The arcade would work better if it had more buttons for each side. But for two kids on Thanksgiving break, I think we did pretty good.

Half circle table

Furniture Redos

I went to a lot of garage sales in my day. A woman was having a moving away sale. I saw this table and fell in love with it. It wasn’t on sale, but the woman sold it to me anyway.

The finish had been worn away – I think it was being used as a plant table. I sanded it down, painted it pink, then painted it white on top of that. I coated it with polyurethane for a little shine.

It perfectly matches my coffee table now. It now hosts a little shrine of my most favorite objects.

Revamping a wooden chest

Furniture Redos

I love to go to garage sales. Sometimes I get sold the best items. It’s why I now own a bowling ball with matching bowling shoes.

At one such garage sale, an scruffy guy sold me this wooden chest full of records for $1 because it was his ex’s. I happily took him up on the offer.

It needed some love, so I cut of the rope handles, sanded it down, spray painted it a blue that reminded me of the ocean, added new hardware, and printed myself a nautical themed liner for the bottom.

It now lives at the foot of my bed and is one of my favorite furniture piece. What a deal! (Sorry that guy’s ex-girlfriend…)

Hello World

Uncategorized

Hello, my name is Liz and I like to make things. All sorts of things. Doesn’t matter what – the enjoyment I get out of sewing a new skirt is the same that I get when I rewire my trailer. If I can make it, then I want to.

In high school I liked to make things I could wear. I would spend weeks making costumes pieces or dresses, just because I could have an outfit just the way I wanted. Some of the time my experiments didn’t work out, sometimes they did, but I always learned something new. Occasionally I made something that could last. I still have the super cute hair barrette I made out of legos and superglue.

In college I started getting into folk instrument making and printmaking. I never thought of myself as handy or artistic, but things kept turning out (with flaws, of course), so I just kept making things. I would use whoever I had around as resources – my dad, brother, or roommates and friends. And I just kept going from there.

So this blog is a way for me to celebrate the act of making. It also allows me to share the process and results with others. A lot of the projects will be old ones from the archives, but I am always in the process of making something new. Thanks for reading; I hope you enjoy it!
